Are Progressive Cavity Pumps Suitable for Thick, Solid-Laden Fluids?

When crude oil becomes highly viscous or contains sand, the right artificial lift system becomes critical. Thick, solid-laden fluids can increase flow resistance and place greater demands on pump operation, so the pump must be matched to the actual well and fluid conditions.

Can Progressive Cavity Pumps Handle Thick, High-Viscosity Fluids?

Yes. Progressive cavity pump performance depends strongly on the relationship between fluid viscosity and rotor-stator clearance. As viscosity increases, the fluid becomes more resistant to movement, making appropriate clearance especially important.

Why does clearance matter?

At HXBS, we develop conical progressive cavity pump technology for demanding oilfield applications. Our IntelliCPCP® intelligent conical PCP system is designed for ultra-heavy crude, conventional crude, sand-laden fluids, high-water-cut crude, and multiphase flow, including associated gas.

Our conical PCP design allows the clearance between the rotor and stator to be adjusted according to operating conditions. Its application range also covers bottomhole temperatures from -10°C to 380°C (14°F to 716°F).

For high-viscosity media, increasing the fit clearance can reduce flow resistance and help the fluid move through the pump more smoothly. For lower-viscosity media, reducing the clearance can help improve volumetric efficiency.

This adjustable approach is particularly useful when fluid properties vary during production.

How Do Progressive Cavity Pumps Handle Solid-Laden Fluids?

Viscosity is only one part of the selection process. When crude contains sand or other solids, we also need to consider the concentration and the operating conditions of the well.

What about sand-laden crude?

Our IntelliCPCP® intelligent conical PCP system specifications provide different sand-content limits for different pump models.

GLB258-17C is specified for sand content up to 3%, while GLB311-12C is specified for 3–10%. GLB258-25C and GLB322-20C are specified for up to 0.3%.

This means we do not apply one sand-content limit to every progressive cavity pump. Instead, we match the pump configuration to the actual production conditions.

Can they handle multiphase fluids?

Yes. IntelliCPCP® is specified for high-water-cut crude and multiphase flow, including associated gas. This makes it important to consider the complete production profile rather than viscosity or sand content alone.

What Fluid Conditions Affect Progressive Cavity Pump Selection?

Once viscosity and solids are understood, several other parameters help determine the appropriate pump configuration.

Fluid viscosity and sand content

Viscosity affects fluid movement and clearance requirements, while sand content affects the mechanical and operating demands placed on the pump.

The IntelliCPCP® specification a fluid viscosity range of 1–200,000 mPa·s. However, the product description separately states a maximum allowable viscosity of 20,000 mPa·s in its discussion of high-viscosity clearance adjustment. We therefore recommend confirming the applicable viscosity range for the specific pump model and operating condition before final selection.

Temperature and well geometry

Temperature can significantly influence fluid behavior and pump operating conditions.

IntelliCPCP® is specified for bottomhole temperatures from -10°C to 380°C (14°F to 716°F), with applications including CSS and SAGD. The maximum wellbore deviation is 80°.

Production rate and dynamic head

The required production rate and dynamic head also need to match the selected pump.

Depending on the model, the rated dynamic head ranges from 1,000 to 2,200 m (3,280 to 7,217 ft), while theoretical displacement at 100 rpm ranges from 37 to 46 m³/d (232 to 289 bbl/d). The speed adjustment range is 0–200 rpm.

IntelliCPCP® for Thick and Solid-Laden Oilfield Fluids

For difficult oilfield fluids, pump selection is not only about moving the fluid. We focus on maintaining suitable clearance, stable operation, and controllable performance as well conditions change.

Conical rotor and stator design

Our FERROXIS® downhole pump uses conical geometry for both the rotor and stator. This creates variable radial clearance between the two components.

The design provides an additional way to adjust clearance and compensate for changes during pump operation while supporting pump efficiency.

Synchronous surface drive

The DynaRL™ surface drive provides synchronous rotor rotation and lifting control. This enables real-time clearance adjustment for the conical PCP.

As a result, surface operation can be coordinated more closely with downhole pump conditions.

Intelligent pump control

The Synergix® control system integrates sensors, frequency converters, process control, and touchscreen interfaces.

Its conical PCP-specific functions include real-time efficiency adjustment, sand management, anti-sticking, and fluid-level management.

Where Can Conical Progressive Cavity Pumps Be Used?

The technology is particularly relevant to oil wells where viscosity, temperature, well geometry, or fluid composition creates additional lifting challenges.

Ultra-heavy crude oil wells

Ultra-heavy crude requires careful consideration of viscosity and pump clearance. IntelliCPCP® is designed for ultra-heavy crude oil wells as well as cold heavy oil production.

Thermal recovery applications

The system supports CSS and SAGD applications and is specified for bottomhole temperatures up to 380°C (716°F).

Highly deviated wells

Well geometry also matters when selecting an artificial lift system. IntelliCPCP® is specified for wellbore deviation up to 80°, with different pump models supporting setting depths from 800 to 1,500 m (2,624 to 4,921 ft).
