High-temperature oil wells often combine heat, heavy crude, sand, water, gas, and changing downhole conditions. In these environments, a PCP needs to maintain stable pumping performance while adapting to changes in fluid properties and operating conditions.
Our IntelliCPCP® high temperature PCP system is built around an all-metal conical PCP design for demanding heavy-oil and thermal-recovery applications. The system combines the downhole pump with surface drive, wellhead protection, downhole stabilization, and intelligent control to address the conditions that make harsh oil wells difficult to produce.
Why Do High Temperature Oil Wells Need a Different PCP Approach?
High temperature is only one part of the challenge. As temperature, viscosity, sand content, and well geometry change, the pump needs to maintain an appropriate operating clearance and stable fluid movement.
Temperature and fluid properties change together
In heavy-oil production, temperature has a direct effect on fluid viscosity. When the fluid becomes thicker, flow resistance increases and pump intake becomes more difficult.
For this reason, a high-temperature PCP needs to work with the actual fluid conditions rather than temperature alone.
Thermal recovery creates changing operating conditions
CSS and SAGD operations involve significant changes in well temperature and fluid properties. The pump therefore needs to remain suitable as production conditions change throughout the operating cycle.
IntelliCPCP® is designed for CSS and SAGD applications, as well as ultra-heavy crude oil and highly deviated wells.
How Does an All-Metal Conical PCP Handle High-Temperature Production?
Once temperature and fluid changes are considered together, pump geometry becomes particularly important. Our FERROXIS® downhole pump uses an all-metal conical rotor and stator to create variable radial clearance.
Variable clearance helps manage different viscosities
The clearance between the rotor and stator can be adjusted according to fluid conditions.
With lower-viscosity fluids, a smaller clearance can improve volumetric efficiency. With high-viscosity fluids, increasing the clearance reduces flow resistance and helps thick fluids pass through the pump more smoothly.
The operating temperature range reaches 380°C
The IntelliCPCP® specifications define an applicable bottomhole temperature range of -10°C to 380°C (14°F to 716°F).
This temperature range supports applications where conventional pumping conditions can become difficult to maintain, particularly in thermal-recovery wells.
Surface hardening supports service-life management
The FERROXIS® pump uses a proprietary nitriding process to increase surface hardening depth.
Together with the conical design, this provides room for continuous clearance compensation as the pump operates and wear develops.
Can a Corrosion-Resistant PCP Handle Heavy Oil, Sand, and Multiphase Fluids?
High-temperature wells rarely involve temperature alone. Heavy crude, sand, water, and associated gas can occur in the same production stream, so the pump needs to accommodate the combined fluid conditions.
High-viscosity crude requires sufficient flow clearance
IntelliCPCP® supports fluid viscosity from 1 to 200,000 mPa·s (cP), depending on the selected pump configuration.
This wide viscosity range covers conventional crude through highly viscous heavy and ultra-heavy crude. The variable-clearance design allows the pump to be configured for different fluid-flow requirements.
Sand content depends on the selected pump model
The specified sand-content limits vary by IntelliCPCP® model:
GLB258-17C: ≤3%
GLB258-25C: ≤0.3%
GLB311-12C: 3–10%
GLB322-20C: ≤0.3%
This difference matters when selecting a pump for a sand-producing well. Instead of applying one generic sand limit to every pump, the configuration should be matched to the actual well conditions.
Multiphase production is part of the application range
The listed fluid compatibility includes ultra-heavy crude, conventional crude, sand-laden fluids, high-water-cut crude, and multiphase flow with associated gas.
The specified CO₂ content is ≤30%, providing an important reference point when assessing fluid compatibility.
Which High Temperature PCP Applications Can Benefit From This Design?
The right pump depends on how the well produces, not simply on its temperature rating. This is why we apply the IntelliCPCP® system to several demanding production conditions.
CSS and SAGD wells
Thermal recovery can create large changes in temperature and viscosity. IntelliCPCP® is designed for CSS and SAGD, where maintaining reliable fluid movement through changing conditions is essential.
Ultra-heavy crude oil wells
For ultra-heavy crude, fluid viscosity can become the main restriction on production. The ability to accommodate viscosity up to 200,000 mPa·s gives the pump a broad operating range for heavy-oil applications.
Highly deviated wells
Well geometry also affects artificial lift performance. IntelliCPCP® supports a maximum wellbore deviation of 80°, making it applicable to highly deviated production wells.
Our oilfield application case studies include CSS in shallow, highly deviated extra-heavy oil wells, as well as medium-deep and highly deviated applications. Across the reported projects, MTBF increased by 45.63%, with the longest pump inspection cycle reaching 4,710 days.
What Should You Consider When Selecting a High Temperature Corrosion-Resistant PCP?
Choosing the right PCP requires more than checking the maximum temperature. The pump needs to match the complete production environment.
Match the pump to the required operating depth
Depending on the model, IntelliCPCP® supports pump setting depths from 800 m to 1,500 m and rated dynamic heads from 1,000 m to 2,200 m.
The rated rotational speed is up to 200 rpm, with a speed adjustment range of 0–200 rpm.
Consider the complete lifting system
The downhole pump works together with the rest of the artificial lift system. IntelliCPCP® integrates the FERROXIS® downhole pump with the DynaRL™ surface drive, THERMOLOCK™ wellhead assembly, Graspos™ balancing assembly, and Synergix® control system.
The control system provides functions including real-time efficiency adjustment, sand management, anti-sticking, and fluid-level management.
How Does HXBS Support High Temperature PCP Applications?
A difficult oil well often requires more than a pump specification. The pump, drive, wellhead, stabilization, and control functions need to work together around the actual production conditions.
HXBS develops conical PCP technology and integrated artificial lift equipment for complex oilfield applications. Our focus is on combining downhole and surface equipment so that the lifting system can be configured around the well rather than treating each component separately.
The system can be configured around the well
The available IntelliCPCP® configurations cover different combinations of temperature, viscosity, sand content, well deviation, setting depth, and dynamic head.
This allows the pump selection to follow the actual production requirements instead of relying on a one-size-fits-all configuration.
Field experience helps guide the selection
Our reported deployments cover 2 countries and 6 oilfields. They include extra-heavy oil, CSS, highly deviated wells, cold heavy-oil production, and combined electric-heating and CO₂ huff-and-puff applications.
Is a High Temperature Corrosion-Resistant PCP Right for Your Well?
The answer depends on the combination of temperature, fluid properties, sand, gas, well geometry, and production requirements.
If your well involves high temperature, heavy or ultra-heavy crude, thermal recovery, sand-laden fluids, or highly deviated geometry, we can assess the operating conditions and recommend a suitable IntelliCPCP® configuration.
