IntelliCPCP® All-Metal Progressing Cavity Pump System: Integrated Injection & Production without Tubing String Retrieval
Published: Jun 03, 2026
In heavy oil thermal recovery wells, every tubing string retrieval significantly increases operational costs. For wells that undergo repeated cycles of steam injection, soaking, and production, the ability to switch between injection and production within the same tubing string is critical to the continuity of thermal recovery operations.
1. The Importance of Integrated Injection & Production
In thermal recovery scenarios such as Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS) or Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD), fluid viscosity, wellhead seal integrity, and downhole flow path switching directly impact operational progress. The injection phase requires dedicated steam channels and robust wellhead seals, while the production phase necessitates the immediate restoration of pump performance. Frequent tubing retrieval for every switch incurs excessive downtime and operational expenses.
2. Design Logic of the IntelliCPCP® System
The IntelliCPCP® system is not merely a downhole pump; it is a comprehensive artificial lift system consisting of top-drive control, wellhead sealing, rotational lifting, downhole pumping, and anti-rotation mechanisms. By integrating the DynaRL® rotational lifting mechanism, THERMOLOCK® sealing unit, and FERROXIS® all-metal conical progressing cavity pump (PCP), the system enables integrated injection and production without the need to pull the tubing string.
DynaRL® Rotational Lifting Mechanism: Manages the lifting and lowering of the sucker rod and rotor.
THERMOLOCK® Sealing Unit: Ensures wellhead integrity under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions.
FERROXIS® All-Metal Conical PCP: Its conical geometry provides the foundation for switching between steam injection paths and production recovery.
Synergix® Intelligent Control Cabinet: Provides drive control, data acquisition, and remote monitoring for intelligent oilfield O&M.
During the injection phase, the lifting mechanism raises the sucker rod, the THERMOLOCK® unit seals the wellhead, and the all-metal conical rotor is synchronously lifted to open the steam injection channel. Simultaneously, the injection filter minimizes impurities entering the pump cavity, protecting the pump and maintaining wellhead integrity. After steam injection, the system lowers the conical rotor to resume production, seamlessly switching the same string back to the production channel.
3. Advantages of Integrated Injection & Production
By eliminating the need for frequent tubing retrieval, the system maximizes operational continuity:
Reduced frequency of injection/production switching operations.
Shortened conversion cycles between injection and production.
Enhanced wellhead integrity and safety.
Improved thermal utilization and Oil-Steam Ratio (OSR).
Ideal Applications:
Heavy oil thermal recovery wells requiring frequent switching between injection and production.
Wells with high tubing retrieval costs and high requirements for on-site intervention.
Wells with stringent requirements for wellhead sealing, high-temperature resistance, and downhole flow path management.
